What is Sensei?
Sensei is an AI-powered learning platform to learn any topic as efficiently as possible.Sensei delivers bite-sized lessons to you on your preferred messaging platform and tests you on the information you learned in a way that increases your retention and recall. We offer both free and paid topics and YOU/your organization* can design custom topics that cater to your particular needs.

Why is it different?
Unlike traditional learning platforms, sensei helps learners not only consume but retain and recall their acquired knowledge.Picture this: You’re doing an online course which consists of watching videos and reading text. After an exam, you successfully graduate the course with a certificate in hand. But, if questioned about the same subject after six months or so, chances are you won’t recall as much as you thought you would.Sensei’s teaching methodology makes sure this doesn’t happen. Combining the ease of messaging platforms (Slack, Teams, etc.), AI powered algorithms and psychologically proven models like Spaced Time Repetitive Learning, sensei tests your knowledge often to make sure that even after those six months, you’ll still be able to recall the information that you consumed.

You can browse topics, find one that you like, and start learning.Every topic in the Sensei platform is divided into multiple cards (bite-sized lessons) that can combine text, audio, video, images, etc. These cards will be sent to you as messages in a private channel, and you can decide on your schedule. For example, you can have a card delivered to you every day at 9 am.
Otherwise, you can always go to the private channel and continue your learning any time you want. Our unique algorithm will test you as you learn in a way that helps you remember the information for a long time. You can learn more about our learning philosophy here (link to My pursuit of learning article in blog)

My Pursuit of Learning
December 7, 2023
Bhaskar Gandavabi, Sensei Learning CEO
Learning something can be fun, it can be rewarding, even useful. Sometimes, we learn something because we must, maybe mandated by our profession, or to keep up with the industry we are in, or due to a certain precept or plain old curiosity. It’s been proven by multiple psychological studies that learning not only improves our confidence and self-efficacy, but it can even rewire our brain circuits to improve creativity. Social psychologists and health professionals recognize that life-long learning can be a strong contributor to better well-being that could be a result of higher income, better composition, and even better physical health. Learning can be defined as developing new skills or challenging your current skills to improve them, sharpen them. Though there’s no innate urge to improve our skills, there certainly seems to be a need.As the pandemic and the resultant lockdown progressed, the number of adults (and kids) who are trying to master new skills flourished along with the burgeoning EdTech market. As schools and colleges were forced to teach online, their focus was on replicating the classroom-style teaching and facetime using video conferencing tools like Zoom heralding the roaring market. Parallelly, in the wake of so-called “Great Resignation”, the number of people who are looking to acquire new skills in pursuit of new careers multiplied, so did the websites and apps that offer online courses. While I cannot presage how the online teaching of academic courses (K-12, universities) will turn out, we can be sure that learning as an activity picked up lots of steam thanks to the pandemic. While we appreciate the reach of these online educational websites that enable someone anywhere on the earth to master the far-ranging skills they care about, these courses are not exactly geared towards what I term as “life-long learners”.Student learning slightly differs from life-long learning, not because of their proclivities but their purpose. Students (of any age) might be learning a topic while trying to master a skill or achieve a certain certification or write a test but Life-long learning transcends the acquisition of academic qualifications, rather broadening or deepening of their existing skills or acquiring new skills continuously. When we acquire certain skills, we might be fortunate enough to put them to use in our life, our hobbies, or our professions right away, but some might be interesting or intriguing while learning them, but they ultimately rust away in our brains. While I do not subscribe to the canard that learning something makes you smarter, it can help you see connections in things you have never seen before, and these new connections in our brain can subtly improve our creativity and life in general, but if we don’t approach learning with a purpose, it’s ultimately useless. Lots of people talk about enjoying popular non-fiction books like Thinking Fast, Thinking Slow by Daniel Kahneman or Yuval Noah Harari’s Sapiens, or Malcolm Gladwell’s David and Goliath or Deep Work by Cal Newport. They are even excited enough to discuss with friends, colleagues, book clubs, and such. But when it comes to succinctly recalling what we read, or summarizing the ideas in the book, or even implementing some of the learnings from the book, much to our chagrin, we all fall short. The retention fades away as time progresses. You remember reading the book, you might even remember what it was about, but you don’t exactly know how to explain it. Sometimes, as we attempt to recall and reconstruct, our understanding comes unmoored. Let’s look at why this happens and if it is a fait accompli.Psychologists like Ebbinghaus long theorized about the learning curve (as in the expression “steep learning curve”, which represents a rapid progression once you start to acquire the skill but is used as a deterrent to indicate how tough a topic is to master) that describes the increasing proficiency of a person longer they spend doing that task.

Ebbinghaus also theorized a ‘forgetting curve’ that charts how information is lost as time progresses if there’s no effort put in to retain it. When we are learning something new, and getting good at it, we are in a state of “flow” or the “zone” but eventually, we come out of the zone and with it start to lose retention. There are 2 well-known techniques that can help us with memory retention. One is a crude mnemonic technique (one of my favorite devices is Kids prefer cheese over fried green spinach helps me remember Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species). Another favored memory retention is constructing an elaborate memory palace that helps you retain and recall long sets of numbers, words, or even names. This particular technique is used often by memory champions of the world (yes, there are such competitions, even a world championship). These memory retention techniques work for retaining information that might help us with basic concepts but are not very useful when it comes to retaining complex information.Complex information, say Quantum Computing concepts can only be retained by learning and recalling the information on a repetitive basis. Studies have shown that spaced-time repetitive learning helps us retain information by periodically recalling it and repeating it at various intervals. So, if a concept is taught, it should be tested, and often. If you fail the test, repeat sooner, if you pass, repeat later. These tests need not be florid but must capture the essence of your understanding, sort of like end-of-chapter questions often found in a textbook. A form of this recall/retention technique can be seen in flashcards made and used by students.

So, to beat the forgetting curve, we need to adopt a spaced-time approach, but the caveat is it may not be practical. Can we repeat reading entire sections of books or watch hours of videos of the same material ad nauseam? Won’t this inexorably bore us to death or will it calcify our pursuit instead of solidifying it? Yes, all these are legitimate questions but if we can test our recall by identifying key concepts, we probably don’t have to repeat the entire section unless we fail the test. This could be a compromise to practically apply the spaced time repetitive learning but this will seriously limit the number of topics that we are pursuing at any point in time. For example, when I went back to college for the second time (after 15 years) to study art history, I spent so much time reading, writing papers, visiting museums, and following art news. Still, since then my interest never faded away, my pursuit of learning, specifically towards art, did. So, without implementing a spaced time repetitive process, I can’t be expected to remember all the information or even answer any questions. So, the answer seems to be to pursue all the topics that you are interested in but space those intervals differently. For example, I don’t want to learn/re-learn art history on a daily basis, but I might be okay with a little bit of time every month, however, I am interested in blockchain and I won’t mind spending a few minutes every hour. See how that works? My reticence, it seems, is inversely proportional to the frequency.I always struggled with this wrenching “recall” problem in my various learning adventures, as I am sure many have. In the last couple of years, my LinkedIn feed has been flooded with news about people completing various courses, getting certifications, acquiring skills, and changing careers. While I am happy for all my friends and colleagues, I wonder how many of them contend with this vexing problem. My guess is most won’t know for sure until they are challenged on those concepts on a constant, repetitive basis. I set out to solve this problem for myself by doing what I know best… start a company and build a product :) To start with, I realized it’s not just the spaced-time repetition or bite-sized lessons, or even an algorithm that can devise tests, it’s the whole gestalt that I needed to capture. But I didn’t want to build Yet Another App however swanky or even build an online education course mill. My phone is filled with these so-called “productivity” apps which I rarely use, and like most, I tend to turn off notifications. So, I set out to build a delivery mechanism to consume topics that are anchored by the spaced time repetitive learning concepts. I decided to bring our “platform” to where people are spending their time during their waking hours… you know, Slack, Microsoft Teams, and even Discord. These messaging tools can be a great springboard for AI bots because the friction of using another app is reduced. We built a chatbot, we call it botSensei that keeps track of what you want to learn when you want to learn it and sends you bite-sized lessons in text, image, audio, or video formats. The best part is, that it automatically tests you periodically to adjust the recall/repeat schedule. The topics are divided into a series of cards (in the tradition of flashcards) and questions. The content is sourced from experts but the AI we are building will not only be able to recommend topics to you but will also be able to create questionnaires of various formats based on the content to augment the expert material. So as a first step, we are launching our platform botSensei on Slack. I chose Slack as our beachhead because it’s one of the most popular communication tools out there and people who use Slack seem to spend most of their time on it anyway, so this won’t be another app or website that will pull their attention away. So, as more learners join our community, our AI can get better at predicting and adjusting learning patterns and reinforcement techniques. I envision botSensei to be either used as a learning platform in your community/group/organization to find interesting topics to learn or serve as a way to create your content and deliver it, a tabula rasa if you will. We are not out to upend or compete with other skill-building or online learning sites, but rather work in concert with them to provide a new way to package and deliver their content.Where do we want to go from here? Our plans include the democratization of not just learning but topic building, so everyone on the platform can be compensated to make it a self-sustaining community because all of us might have skills that we would like to teach others. Of course, there are still a lot of questions to figure out, like how we corral and curate the topics, how we expand to other messaging platforms, and whether to gamify or stick to hyper-focused personalized learning. Reid Hoffman (founder of LinkedIn) once said an entrepreneur is someone who jumps off a cliff and builds a plane on the way down. I think we've found our glide path, so now it’s time to jump.Ready to jump? Join us in our quest for lifelong learning!

Q: What is Sensei?
Sensei is an e-learning platform that delivers micro lessons via messaging platforms like Slack, MS Teams and Discord. You can learn from many of our free courses or premium courses or even make your own.Q: How to get started with Sensei?
Visit our plans page and select a plan, choose your messaging platform (currently Slack, MS Teams and Discord are supported) and sign up. For more details, checkout our platform support pageQ: What makes Sensei’s learning approach unique?
Unlike other online/e-learning platforms, Sensei doesn’t require you to install a new app or even open a new website. Most of us whether in school, or at work use a messaging app for communication. Sensei seamlessly sends you lessons on-demand or on a schedule. Though Sensei supports video lessons, our philosophy is to rely on text/image based lessons which are proven to be more effective. Using psychological techniques like spaced-timed-repetitive learning approach, Sensei repeatedly tests your knowledge to cement your retention. You can interact with Sensei in natural language to ask questions and get clarifications and summaries on the topic that you are learning.Q: What are some of the features of Sensei?
Bite-sized lessons/Micro lessons: sensei lessons are small (designed to be consumed within 5 minutes) but effective and use a combination of text, images, animation, video and audio to make the lessons interesting and approachable.Scheduling: Since Sensei runs on your messaging platform where you spend most of your time anyway, you can have Sensei deliver your lessons as a message on a periodic basis, like hourly, daily, weekly etc.Spaced Time Repetitive Learning: AI powered algorithms and psychologically proven models like Spaced Time Repetitive Learning, sensei tests your knowledge often to make sure that even after those six months, you’ll still be able to recall the information that you consumed.Community Discussions: Sensei provides a common channel where you can interact with others in your organization who are learning the same topic as you.Share your progress: Share your progress/accomplishments not only within your organization but on social media!Q: What sets Sensei apart from the competition?
Most of the online learning platforms rely on video lessons, which are not very effective, Sensei relies on text/image based lessons and using AI, generates questions that are uniquely suited to enhance student’s learning and retention
Unlike many other online platforms, on Sensei, you can create your own courses and use it yourself as flashcards, or publish it to your team or community, even earn money by making the courses as paid courses
The nature of messaging platforms like Slack, MS Teams and Discord lends itself naturally to create a community of cohorts that are interested in learning the same topic and allows communication with your fellow students and instructors
AI Chatbot that is fully trained on the same course material you are learning can answer any question you might have and help you along
